Seriously someone tell me are they gay or…?
Not necessarily gay, but Shinji did likely feel a stronger connection with Kaworu than he did with any other character in the series, since Kaworu was the only one who really accepted Shinji for who he was. Shinji’s character is one that feels like the whole world doesn’t actually care about him unless there is something to gain from acknowledging him. Because of the latter half of the belief, Shinji doesn’t really socialize very well with others - and even when he does, they end up being taken away from him in some tragic manner, leaving him even more alone than he was before. Kaworu, on the other hand, seemed to genuinely want to be friends with Shinji.
